trans-Zeatin is generally considered to be the most potent of all of the cytokinins. It is also adenine-based, (2E)-2-methyl-4-(1H-purin-6-ylamino)-2-buten-1-ol, 6-(4-Hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enylamino)purine. trans-Zeatin is a naturally occurring cytokinin in plant tissue culture that stimulates cell division and enhances shoot formation. Application trans-Zeatin has been used:

as a media supplement for the isolation and culture of pretransitional and transitional embryos

as a culture media supplement for incubating alginate strip culture

as a growth regulator in modified basal Murashige and Skoog medium
